Alex was after one wall lamp for his own home: simple, warm, made of real wood. Everything he found was plastic, or shouting. So he bent the first shade himself.

Friends asked for one. Then strangers. Since 2018 Alex and Darya have made every piece by hand, in their workshop in Poland.

The workshop

Everything still comes out of the same room. Thin layers of birch plywood are bent over forms, a leaf of veneer is chosen for its figure, oil is rubbed in by hand. There is no shelf of finished lamps to pick from, because each sconce is made after it is ordered.

That is also why no two are identical. Veneer is a slice of a tree rather than a printed surface, so grain, tone and open pores change from sheet to sheet.

How each sconce is made

• Bending. Thin layers of plywood are shaped over forms into the curve that gives each design its silhouette.
• Veneering. A leaf of natural veneer — cherry, walnut, rosewood, ash, etimoe, zebrano, birch or Japanese ash — is selected by hand and laid over the form.
• Finishing. Every surface is hand-sanded and finished with natural oils that deepen the grain without harsh chemicals.
• Assembly. Certified electrical components are fitted by hand, and every lamp is tested before it leaves the workshop.

Material and waste

Veneer is chosen for its character rather than its uniformity. Offcuts are reused where they can be, orders travel in recyclable packaging, and the lamps are built to be serviced — bulbs replaced, parts swapped — instead of thrown away.

Selected designs are UL Listed and CSA Approved, tested to the safety standards required in the United States and Canada. Those pieces are gathered in one place: the certified collection.

Why wood

Light through veneer is not the same as light through glass or steel. It comes out warmer and slower, and the wall it sits on stops reading as a wall.
